Eclectic Expressions

Home Décor is the most obvious way to express yourself and create an aura accordingly. Everything that is a part of your house, from that tapestry on the entrance to the little lamp by your bed is a part of your décor. So basically when you are engulfed in the ambience of your house all the time, it is a good idea to give a thought about what exactly do you want to feel like when you enter your little piece of heaven. And the answers will vary. For some of us, after a long day’s work, we just want to be cozy in our warm intimate space and for others, especially the party animals; we might want our house to wear an inviting look all the time with a lot of dazzle and dance. The good news is that each and every crazy impression in our minds can be brought to life with a few simple steps. I like to call it- give a makeover to your house!

Your house tells your story. And the story has a lot of words, trust me, literally thousands of words. The color shades you use around your house reveal a trait of your personality too. I personally like to think that each color has something amicable to offer. A yellow and orange combo gives an enthusiastic look with a warm and welcoming scent. Black and gray can sop up the formal attire of your house. Pink on the other hand is outright girly but equally brave. And blue is something that goes with almost everything and all the tastes (couples with opposite tastes, you might want to try this out!).  By now you must be thinking it is all about colors. But you are wrong! While color plays a major role in creating a mood, you can never ignore the schnitzel in noodles. And all the things you keep in your house, sofas and beds, little antiques and paintings and even the murals (if you fancy them) are all part of your schnitzel. After all no matter how busy we are, we never want to crash on a dilapidated sofa staring at a downright obnoxious mural! Your living room is the most shared space of your house. That drops a hint that while you should definitely be comfortable in this room but you also need to endow it with a welcoming look. But when it comes to your bedroom you can have it all by yourself. It is your private delight. You can even add a theme of your personal favorite sport or give it a traditional shade may be. Whatever you do, it is always better that your house carries one theme over all blended over various rooms. Nobody wants to seem erroneous and contradictory in themselves right!

And all this home décor frenzy reaches it’s zenith right now. Diwali time! Brace yourselves because all the neighboring houses are going to put on their best suits. You definitely want your home to stand apart right. And it certainly will. Diwali décor can literally light up your house! It all starts at your doorstep. The beautiful variegated rangoli which is the first thing that can become the cynosure of all your guests’ eyes. This rangoli can carry a traditional flowery theme, a mix of the swastika and or you could bring a totally new profound scenery of that beach you once visited. It is all about your creativity. While the desi brown diyas are all time favorites, there is no harm in trying votive candles floating in water. Giving a cover change to our sofas is also an amazing idea. Traditional embroideries on quilts are particularly lauded this time of the year. Recessed lighting can probably take a break this Diwali and the yellow lamps can finally be put to use. Scented candles swirling in a background of fresh flowers from your garden and special emphasis to knick knacks will surely sop up the Diwali look. Even the doormats can be replaced with something traditional or a happy diwali cliché would elevate the look too. A mellifluous music box playing the slow classical tunes can definitely appeal the Indian in you. (and make you neighbors envy you, if that’s what you are looking for! ) Lightings on the outdoor walls need to be scrutinized this year. The alternate red and yellow lightings never grow old. But there is a plethora of lights bombing the market. Lights with stark disco effects and the blue-white-purple blend are presentable options. And of course for the patriotic among us who despise the china markets, traditional lanterns, garlands and kalash, painted diyas have flooded the markets early. We are all going to light up dozens of diyas which will be placed in all corners of our houses. Torans will grace every door. But you can put you nosy mind to work even in these firm decorations. Diyas arranged in swastika patterns and torans coupled with marigold strings will only add to the vigor.

There will always be more ideas. And the good news is that there are no rules. So this diwali let your house be a figment of your imagination. Let it speak your mind, pamper you and levitate your mood. Let your haven be a showcase of all your eclectic expressions. Keep decorating fellas!
