Superstitions Related To Decorating Your Home

We, as a society, have always fostered and upheld our share of beliefs. Some of them can be pretty irrational too, superstitions, as we call them. But irrespective of the scope of their rationalities, our society takes a dip in such notions from time to time, be it for internal peace or just as an extension of some silly fears. And while we are talking beliefs, some home décor superstitions will never cease to exist. While the very word superstition, may seem like a bit of an exaggeration but trust me, as you read further, you will realize that these notions are not really a piece of science. The skeptics might abhor them all, but at the end of the day, some of them facilitate better interior decorations, so why not have a look at them!

  • Do not display unlit candles in a room- It is said that unlit candles being displayed in a room bring bad luck. While I really cannot think of any rational root this practice might have, we can all agree that the very purpose of candles is to be lighted! Lighted candles not only add to the beauty of our rooms but they also lighten up the moods of the people present in that place. That is a double extravaganza! Whether you follow the superstition or do it in the general sense, lighting up the candles seems like a good idea.

  • No broker mirrors please- Broken mirrors are again considered very unlucky and it is advised that any broken mirror should be immediately done away. Advocates of witchcraft may even go to suggest that broken mirrors attract evil spirits. Being a non believer myself, I would rather ignore the witchcraft part. But one cannot deny the fact that common sense dictates that we get rid of broken sharp objects from our house. Broken mirrors are clearly useless and pose an added danger of potential injury if the kids of the house get their hands of them.

  • Scatter coins in the living room of a new house for financial prosperity- Filipino legend has it that the practice of scattering coins in the living room of a new house paves your way up the financial ladders. Now ‘scattering’ coins might sound like a pathetic idea at the onset but if we think about it, this practice can be used in the most creative sense. We can place coins in certain patterns on the centre table, coins may also find a place in the pedestal of our favorite statues and they may even be placed alongside the decorative stones that complement the indoor plants. Doesn’t sound that preposterous now, does it?

  • Evergreen creepers affixed on the rafters- Another recipe for good luck. I like this one because it magnifies the ambience of the suburban look we might want to give our houses and a lot of flowering creepers have a great smell too. So if there is any truth in this superstition indeed, you get a beautiful roof with a great smell plus some good luck. Looks like a deal to me!

  • Acorns on windowsills – According to Norse superstition, acorns placed on windowsills protect the house from being struck by lightning. I don’t really understand how a petty acorn can battle against the forces of nature but to this date, window blind pulls decorated like acorns are pretty popular.

  • Horseshoe brings good fortune- The horseshoe is considered very lucky and is hung at various places in homes and even offices at times. The horseshoe has definitely gained it’s share of fame from this superstition, as you can find literally millions of decorative horseshoe items for home décor on every popular site or shop.

  • Wind chimes scare away demons- This is my personal favorite old wives’ tale because I love wind chimes! And quite frankly who doesn’t? Everyone ought to enjoy tinkling melodies hanging on their doors, right! Wind chimes are the most intricate decorative bagatelles these days. They are adorned in the most mesmerizing designs and sophisticated tunes. I personally feel all doors deserve wind chimes. And who can say, may be they actually spook the demons away.

India - The land of art and craft

India is the land of arts and crafts- This cliche never grows old. And candidly speaking, why would it?  We as a nation have forever been enchanted by art patrons and blessed with inspired variegated artists. Every time when we think about purchasing that Van Gogh for the front alley, there is a part of us that races back to the Bastar arts and cave paintings. After all, Indians always be Indians! So liberating our appetite for these marvel tapestries and timeless sculptures, let us reminisce some evergreen arts and crafts down the lane. With such a colossal treasure of crafts at our disposal, it will be a good idea to explore some of the highlights regionally.

Durgi Stone Craft- Durgi village is a profound cultural heritage thriving in Andhra Pradesh. The village has secured a dot in the global maps through the commendable stone crafted artifacts, which have been the legacy of people of this village for generations. Sculptors make simple, utilitarian items these days generally found in the form of lampshades and paperweights. These stone crafts are the best general replacements for all the jejune table elements you have probably grown tired of.

Bastar Arts of Chhattisgarh- Bastar art is one broad term used for a cornucopia of countless craft patterns. The Bastar art of the tribes of Chhattisgarh, spruces up your house and gives it a new antique look. Delicate bamboo baskets can effectively replace the redundant glass bowls on the coffee table. Bell metal works, popularly known as Dhokra, are lustrous handicrafts made using brass and bronze. These tiny sculptures include quotidian items like toys, figurines, candle stands etc. Clear your bleary eyes, may be your sconce needs a change now!

Seashell Craft of Goa- Say Goa and you immediately get a mirage of beaches and seashore in your mind. Fair enough, Goa is a paradise of vast stretching sea beaches after all. And while we are talking Goa, how can we forget the seashell crafts! Craftsmen collect sea shells and then carve the most amazing and invigorating designs out of them. Chandeliers, ashtrays and lamp shades can definitely try a new look with these handicrafts.

Wood Carvings in the great North- Jammu and Kashmir have showered India with the elite walnut wood carving. Walnut wood, which is readily available in this region, is considered the best for carvings because even after excessive intricate work it retains it’s strength. The most magnificent use of these carvings is the decoration of ceilings. These wood carvings give the ceiling a refreshed new look and cater an exquisite change from the conventional false ceiling these days.

Beaux Art of the Seven Sisters- The seven north eastern states have their own vivid and dexterous heritage of art and craft. Handlooms of Tripura are one of their kind boasting horizontal and vertical stripes with scattered embroidery in different colors. Just skim through a few of these hand woven quilts, pillow covers and curtains and I can guarantee that you will never go back to those sequin works again. Nagaland has it’s share of earthen pots which are made without the use of wheel and the accessories that accompany the pots which are all made from the most bizarre things from bird wings to beads. These out of the box decorations guarantee a wow factor for your little house. Manipur can be attributed with it’s mats made of spongy reeds. These mats can easily find a place in your house as they are both aesthetically pleasing and easily maintainable.

Filigree and Applique works- As far as arts and crafts are concerned, Odisha is at loggerheads with the rest of the country. These appliqué works are basically the sketches of animals, birds, flowers etc arranged geometrically and worked on flaring colours of fabric. Applique Chharis (umbrellas) can be used as garden umbrellas in sprawling lawns, lending both grace and colour to the setting. Filigree or silverware work of Odisha echoes across the nation. The artisans shape out intricate designs out of tiny slivers of silver. These comprise everyday products ranging from vermillion receptacles to decorative showpieces. The end product is simply a feast for the eyes. Filigree can give your house a showpiece makeover!

Ivory Paintings of Rajasthan- Ivory bangles and paintings have been an integral part of the Rajasthani heritage for decades. Ivory is inlaid and shaped into intricate items of beauty and miniature paintings are also carved out of the same. Ivory adds an element of royalty to your haven. For those of us who are not a part of the royal families, atleast we can cherish our share of elite lifestyle this way!

Tanjore Paintings of Tamil Nadu- India is a complete land in itself, ergo, it has something to offer for every kind of denizen. For the spiritual people out there, Tanjore Painting has to be your pick of decor. Tanjore paintings of Tamil Nadu trace their roots to the golden era in the 18th century in the Gupta Empire. The paintings are known for their grandeur arising from the adornments of semi precious stones, pearls, glasses and even gold. The rich vibrant colours and artistic work characterize these paintings. They are mostly manifestations of various Hindu Gods and Goddesses and are a must-keep for all the ‘slightly spiritual’ decorators. I mean when spirituality meets style you can’t ask for anything more!

Is your house ready for Santa?

By Shreya Sharma
You better watch out
You better not cry
Better not pout
I am telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town!

1. Christmas Star- This is definitely the most flaunted decoration in every house. The kids and the adults, everybody is excited for the final touch up on the Christmas tree and a lot of ‘omg’ and ‘holy christ’ echo around the house as the star is placed atop the tree. For those of you who are bored of tinsel stars how about a homemade star? It is easier than it sounds. Try your hand at origami stars this year. Take my word, everybody will be mooning and crooning all over your star!

2.  Baubles- Christmas baubles, tinker balls and crystal decorations give that glistening mood your house desires. Shiny little balls of heaven dotting your Christmas tree and every other corner of your winter wonderland. Be it a sequin bauble or a pearl octagonal one or even something you crafted yourself, they certainly look ravishing. For those of you going all cottage industry this year, just take some normal balls and wrap them in red polka dot pouches and neatly tie a double not with a silver thread. Tada! Bauble’s ready!

3.  Mistletoe- How can we forget a kiss under the mistletoe when its festival time. This season, make sure to buy some mistletoes from the local market and dangle them on the front door. It is the sweetest traditional welcome sign for all of your friends and family. You could also make a mistletoe ball and droop it for the people falling in love out there! And wreaths made from these festive white berried green stretches will give your house it’s share of elm an oak.

4.  Nativity scene- Cribs never go out of fashion when we are talking Christmas. A silent nativity scene is a must for the holy night. If you already have some felted Christian dolls and some rustic moose and reindeers then a little haystack and fresh leaves and twigs from your garden, a few wooden boxes, clubbed with a pinch of craft and creativity will give you the perfect nativity scene for your living room. And needless to say, it will make those Christmas recitals a lot more fun.

5.  Stockings- As you are preparing your dear dwelling for Santa, stockings matter more than can imagine. No stocking, no gifts! Now you don’t want to miss out on your gifts, do you? And you can knit the best stockings at home with the modest knitting skills. The Scandinavian red and white print is always cute and you could also try something new like some reindeer prints or multicolored stockings. Old torn rugs can make the best stocking material especially if you have them in red and green colors. Say one stocking for Santa and one for the elves!

6.  Flower Wreaths – Hanging wreaths on your doors is an old Greek tradition that has seeped into Christmas too. Wreaths decorating main doors is a quotidian sight in Christmas time. A variety of wreaths are available at the stores next door and you can also make some wreaths on your own. Take some coat hangers and loop them end to end so as to form the base of the wreath, then collect some creepers and mistletoes and glue them around to the loop. Later you can add natural accents like pinecones and some willows to make it all the more appealing. And if you are tired of the mundane natural wreaths, I have a new idea. Scrounge all the vintage items in your house- baubles, angels, satin ribbons, bells and everything else you can and use them to make a wreath. This will definitely give your door a distinguished look.

7.  Lights- What is a Christmas welcoming house if not a tantalizing cocktail of glitter and shimmer. Christmas lights are the cynosure of all eyes and that is why they should be absolutely abundant. You need them around your crib, your tree, on windowsills and fireplaces and all around your house outside. For decorating the bushes in your gardens you could have web lights and for the rest of the house straight string lights should be the pick. Try experimenting with white, blue and pink in the lightest shades.

8.  Poinsettias, pinecones and cranberries- All of these natural bundles of Christmas joy will give the final touch up to your delightful home. Use them to decorate the mantle on your fireplace, as add-ons around your candles, to give a tinge of the festival to your tables or as supplements on the wreaths. They will definitely spruce up the aura.

VASTU SHASTRA- It just can’t get cooler than this

Vastu Shastra- the science of interior design and architecture, this treatise had been crafted generations ago as a guideline in the Indian subcontinent to integrate architecture and designing with nature and make structures reverberating with positive vibes. While many interior designers have ridiculed Vastu as preposterous and confining, a little ways down the road it becomes crystal clear that this science is just the most basic designing sense consecrated into a detailed text.

I know that the very word consecrate might put off a few of you but hang on, in the following lines I mention the ten important things you must be prudent about, while decorating your house.(Watch out! Vastu and you are going to be on the same page now!)

10. Avoid Clutters- There is nothing more repulsive than a house without an arrangement. Be  it the modern minimalist approach or a rustic style, nothing justifies an out of symmetry chaotic arrangement. Vastu tells this very tale in a slightly mystical manner. It is advisable to get rid of old decorations, damaged items, worn out boxes etc to dispel the negative energies mustering in your house.

Source: Buzzfeed.com

9. Shape the rooms rectangular- This is a very geometrical perspective. Rectangle or square shaped rooms facilitate efficient utilization of the whole land area and are also more manageable from the furniture point of view. As most of our tables, cupboards and beds are all rectangular, they fit in line with rectangular rooms. And Vastu too gives this a green card. It has been scripted in the Vastu Shastra that rectangular rooms bring about order in the house and create a happy aura.

this is almost exactly like the table i am ordering for our new home, it is fantastic, and the pictures do not do it justice, it creates a much more modern holiday setting and is so much more dramatic than the traditional 12 top rectangular tables

8. Color therapy is indispensable- All of our interior designers just go highbrow when it comes to colors. There are a million theories out there- orange will give an enthusiastic touch, blue calms the onlooker, green is literally evergreen and the blabber is never ending. Time for some revelation- These themes have not been crafted by some Tom, Dick or Harry; Vastu already said it all. Light colors like blue, pink, lavender are suitable for bedroom. Kitchen should have a tinge of fire and hence red is the pick.  White is suitable for study to enhance concentration.

home sweet home

7.  Be painting wise- I guess everyone can agree unanimously that our personal little haven should always be pleasing, that is like the number one priority. Ergo the paintings and murals we choose for our walls become very vital. We have been flooding our peppy walls with sunrises and sunsets, horses azure and dotted lilies. Vastu since times memorial has just been placing a gentle reminder about the same. Paintings of natural scenes are appreciated and depictions of wars, violent or somber sketches are discouraged.

6. Mirrors can make it or break it- Vastu places strong emphasis on the proper placement of mirrors in the house as they are lauded as the reflectors of energy. They can either brim the house with vigor or drain out all the delight of the residents. Mirrors are abhorred in front of beds (you don’t want to be the crazy snow white’s mother, do you?) and study (your books deserve all of your attention). This dictum seems perfectly scientific and supportable I guess.

5. Lighting cannot be taken lightly- Vastu Shastra, interior designers and prospective residents resonantly stress in unison that the lightings of your house can prominently affect your mood. Reminisce every time you have walked into your house when there was a power cut, wasn’t there an involuntary element of shock and dismay? To overcome the prolonged depressing effects of unsuitable lights, Vastu has one simple rule- make it bright and warm.

4. Basil has to find a place in your abode- Basil plant or tulsi must be planted in the front verandah of the house. Apart from the medicinal qualities of this plant, it adds to the greenery of the house and as indoor plants have always been the top favorites of the sophisticated decorators, why not keep something that is aesthetically pleasing and also has some viable value.  Vastu also suggests that thorny plants like cactus should be avoided (fair enough, you don’t want to get hurt accidently!)

3. Doorbells should be mellifluous- How many times have we made faces when that devil bell chimes and we are in the middle of some work! And this is perfectly natural, but while we blame our busy schedules for this attitude; care to spare a thought about the doorbell? Vastu dictates that doorbell should neither be very low pitched, which might be a little inaudible, nor very high pitched, which definitely annoys our brain cells. So just choose a soothing bell, something that can get into your ears and make you smile.

2.  Curtains matter more than you think- Curtains directly affect the ambience of a room. That is why Vastu underscores that stark colors like red and blue black should be kept at an arm’s length in bedrooms while these same colors can be used in the living area to give a classy look. For bedrooms and study, light colored curtains make a perfect choice.

Source: zerotips.com

1. Main entrance is actually the “main” entrance- The front door or the main entrance of your house is the first pallet to flaunt off your decoration quotient. People already emphasize the front door too much and often falter on making a decision about this first look. Vastu Shastra has a simple principle for this- Make the front door stand out by giving it a bigger frame than all the other doors. It should emanate grandeur and auspicious positive symbols. A welcoming and warm look that is all!

So all in all, Vastu Shastra is not some ruler wielding typical professor which fuses your decoration plans, infact it is a facilitator which can assist your decisions through simple rules. And trust me when you have a streamlined treasure to guide the tiniest of your home décor elements, from paintings to the front door, it just can’t get cooler than this.

Time is Free But it‘s Priceless

There are times when we are all running late for something. There’s chaos everywhere while you are munching that toast, grabbing your coffee to catch that last train to your office. But wait a second. Rewind. How did you get here? Oh yes, the alarm clock turned you down. Again! And of course you never bothered to replace that wall clock which has been dead since an era. Well this scene is infectious these days. With smart phones taking over the world, everybody thinks they have all they need in that one plastic slab. But even smart phones can’t buy time. Time can only be saved and you have to be cognizant of time passing by to feel the need to conserve it. And a clock can do it all!

A clock is the most indispensable display on your wall. All of us, no matter how timely or lackadaisical, steal a gaze at the clock at least twice every day. And that’s why it is tremendously cardinal that we set something ravishing for our glance. Ergo it’s time to shop wall clocks online! But we can’t just rush into an online store and buy the first thing we see. When we are talking clocks, as the clocks are ticking, it is vital that we decide how we want our clocks to tick. A sparrow blasts out every hour, or an angry bird adlibbing per se or how about an antique pendulum chime. The choices are behemoth. So at the advent you might want to season your requirement. If the clock is meant for your living room, a vintage one would probably be your first call but if you are looking for something that can teach little Luke the importance of waking up early in the morning, I am affirmative your child would be happier to see a Disney wall clock hovering on his head. There is always food for thought when it comes to the creative minds. A knife and fork clock will not only reset your brunch time but also add up to your kitchen décor. And then a tinge of spirituality never harmed anyone, so while you are skimming sections, be sure to drop at the spiritual corner. May be you will find yourself awestruck by the amicable fusion of God and time.

For all the ladies out there, enough of dress delirium already. This time buy something unusual to flaunt off. Have a thing for ties; go ahead you can even find a tie clock. Clubbing your love for coffee or scrambled eggs showdown with timed tick tocks just adds to your forte. Infact, clocks can solve problems in ways you never imagined before. Time teaches all. The quote never grows old. But how about time solves all. Yes, that’s right. You are too frenzied about the perfect painting for your bedroom. How about a big red heart clock? It is a one for all replacement and reminds you that you have to get going now in the most subtle manner. You can even make the prettiest collage clock, with it’s hands ticking alongside all your favorite snaps. For the less spendthrifts among you, before you jump to homemade clocks, spare some time to google the cheapest wall clocks online and I can assure that you will be enthused.

Now as much as I have blabbered about wall clocks, I can give you the top three reasons to go get one for yourself right now!
1.    It makes you time wise- People gear up tech quotients, finance quotients but the most important of all is the time quotient. Time management is not a theoretical concept, rather it is a practical revolution with most applications. And human beings always need a push. And hence you need a clock staring blank point at your face to stop reading this blog and start doing your work!
2.    It’s a lot less effort- Choosing a whole package of wall décors is much more exhaustive and expensive than choosing just one perfect clock. Rather than choosing five items for each room that have to poise the room’s aura and blend in with each other, just get a wall clock!
3.    Smart phone repellant- Confrontation time. All of us use – let me see what time it is- as the most common excuse to check our facebook notifications. Once you have a ‘real clock’ to tell you the same, that’s one excuse down to linger in the virtual world.

Now get out of your cloak and go get a clock!

Eclectic Expressions

Home Décor is the most obvious way to express yourself and create an aura accordingly. Everything that is a part of your house, from that tapestry on the entrance to the little lamp by your bed is a part of your décor. So basically when you are engulfed in the ambience of your house all the time, it is a good idea to give a thought about what exactly do you want to feel like when you enter your little piece of heaven. And the answers will vary. For some of us, after a long day’s work, we just want to be cozy in our warm intimate space and for others, especially the party animals; we might want our house to wear an inviting look all the time with a lot of dazzle and dance. The good news is that each and every crazy impression in our minds can be brought to life with a few simple steps. I like to call it- give a makeover to your house!

Your house tells your story. And the story has a lot of words, trust me, literally thousands of words. The color shades you use around your house reveal a trait of your personality too. I personally like to think that each color has something amicable to offer. A yellow and orange combo gives an enthusiastic look with a warm and welcoming scent. Black and gray can sop up the formal attire of your house. Pink on the other hand is outright girly but equally brave. And blue is something that goes with almost everything and all the tastes (couples with opposite tastes, you might want to try this out!).  By now you must be thinking it is all about colors. But you are wrong! While color plays a major role in creating a mood, you can never ignore the schnitzel in noodles. And all the things you keep in your house, sofas and beds, little antiques and paintings and even the murals (if you fancy them) are all part of your schnitzel. After all no matter how busy we are, we never want to crash on a dilapidated sofa staring at a downright obnoxious mural! Your living room is the most shared space of your house. That drops a hint that while you should definitely be comfortable in this room but you also need to endow it with a welcoming look. But when it comes to your bedroom you can have it all by yourself. It is your private delight. You can even add a theme of your personal favorite sport or give it a traditional shade may be. Whatever you do, it is always better that your house carries one theme over all blended over various rooms. Nobody wants to seem erroneous and contradictory in themselves right!

And all this home décor frenzy reaches it’s zenith right now. Diwali time! Brace yourselves because all the neighboring houses are going to put on their best suits. You definitely want your home to stand apart right. And it certainly will. Diwali décor can literally light up your house! It all starts at your doorstep. The beautiful variegated rangoli which is the first thing that can become the cynosure of all your guests’ eyes. This rangoli can carry a traditional flowery theme, a mix of the swastika and or you could bring a totally new profound scenery of that beach you once visited. It is all about your creativity. While the desi brown diyas are all time favorites, there is no harm in trying votive candles floating in water. Giving a cover change to our sofas is also an amazing idea. Traditional embroideries on quilts are particularly lauded this time of the year. Recessed lighting can probably take a break this Diwali and the yellow lamps can finally be put to use. Scented candles swirling in a background of fresh flowers from your garden and special emphasis to knick knacks will surely sop up the Diwali look. Even the doormats can be replaced with something traditional or a happy diwali cliché would elevate the look too. A mellifluous music box playing the slow classical tunes can definitely appeal the Indian in you. (and make you neighbors envy you, if that’s what you are looking for! ) Lightings on the outdoor walls need to be scrutinized this year. The alternate red and yellow lightings never grow old. But there is a plethora of lights bombing the market. Lights with stark disco effects and the blue-white-purple blend are presentable options. And of course for the patriotic among us who despise the china markets, traditional lanterns, garlands and kalash, painted diyas have flooded the markets early. We are all going to light up dozens of diyas which will be placed in all corners of our houses. Torans will grace every door. But you can put you nosy mind to work even in these firm decorations. Diyas arranged in swastika patterns and torans coupled with marigold strings will only add to the vigor.

There will always be more ideas. And the good news is that there are no rules. So this diwali let your house be a figment of your imagination. Let it speak your mind, pamper you and levitate your mood. Let your haven be a showcase of all your eclectic expressions. Keep decorating fellas!
