1. Christmas Star- This is definitely the most flaunted decoration in every house. The kids and the adults, everybody is excited for the final touch up on the Christmas tree and a lot of ‘omg’ and ‘holy christ’ echo around the house as the star is placed atop the tree. For those of you who are bored of tinsel stars how about a homemade star? It is easier than it sounds. Try your hand at origami stars this year. Take my word, everybody will be mooning and crooning all over your star!

2.  Baubles- Christmas baubles, tinker balls and crystal decorations give that glistening mood your house desires. Shiny little balls of heaven dotting your Christmas tree and every other corner of your winter wonderland. Be it a sequin bauble or a pearl octagonal one or even something you crafted yourself, they certainly look ravishing. For those of you going all cottage industry this year, just take some normal balls and wrap them in red polka dot pouches and neatly tie a double not with a silver thread. Tada! Bauble’s ready!

3.  Mistletoe- How can we forget a kiss under the mistletoe when its festival time. This season, make sure to buy some mistletoes from the local market and dangle them on the front door. It is the sweetest traditional welcome sign for all of your friends and family. You could also make a mistletoe ball and droop it for the people falling in love out there! And wreaths made from these festive white berried green stretches will give your house it’s share of elm an oak.

4.  Nativity scene- Cribs never go out of fashion when we are talking Christmas. A silent nativity scene is a must for the holy night. If you already have some felted Christian dolls and some rustic moose and reindeers then a little haystack and fresh leaves and twigs from your garden, a few wooden boxes, clubbed with a pinch of craft and creativity will give you the perfect nativity scene for your living room. And needless to say, it will make those Christmas recitals a lot more fun.

5.  Stockings- As you are preparing your dear dwelling for Santa, stockings matter more than can imagine. No stocking, no gifts! Now you don’t want to miss out on your gifts, do you? And you can knit the best stockings at home with the modest knitting skills. The Scandinavian red and white print is always cute and you could also try something new like some reindeer prints or multicolored stockings. Old torn rugs can make the best stocking material especially if you have them in red and green colors. Say one stocking for Santa and one for the elves!

6.  Flower Wreaths – Hanging wreaths on your doors is an old Greek tradition that has seeped into Christmas too. Wreaths decorating main doors is a quotidian sight in Christmas time. A variety of wreaths are available at the stores next door and you can also make some wreaths on your own. Take some coat hangers and loop them end to end so as to form the base of the wreath, then collect some creepers and mistletoes and glue them around to the loop. Later you can add natural accents like pinecones and some willows to make it all the more appealing. And if you are tired of the mundane natural wreaths, I have a new idea. Scrounge all the vintage items in your house- baubles, angels, satin ribbons, bells and everything else you can and use them to make a wreath. This will definitely give your door a distinguished look.

7.  Lights- What is a Christmas welcoming house if not a tantalizing cocktail of glitter and shimmer. Christmas lights are the cynosure of all eyes and that is why they should be absolutely abundant. You need them around your crib, your tree, on windowsills and fireplaces and all around your house outside. For decorating the bushes in your gardens you could have web lights and for the rest of the house straight string lights should be the pick. Try experimenting with white, blue and pink in the lightest shades.

8.  Poinsettias, pinecones and cranberries- All of these natural bundles of Christmas joy will give the final touch up to your delightful home. Use them to decorate the mantle on your fireplace, as add-ons around your candles, to give a tinge of the festival to your tables or as supplements on the wreaths. They will definitely spruce up the aura.
