VASTU SHASTRA- It just can’t get cooler than this

Vastu Shastra- the science of interior design and architecture, this treatise had been crafted generations ago as a guideline in the Indian subcontinent to integrate architecture and designing with nature and make structures reverberating with positive vibes. While many interior designers have ridiculed Vastu as preposterous and confining, a little ways down the road it becomes crystal clear that this science is just the most basic designing sense consecrated into a detailed text.

I know that the very word consecrate might put off a few of you but hang on, in the following lines I mention the ten important things you must be prudent about, while decorating your house.(Watch out! Vastu and you are going to be on the same page now!)

10. Avoid Clutters- There is nothing more repulsive than a house without an arrangement. Be  it the modern minimalist approach or a rustic style, nothing justifies an out of symmetry chaotic arrangement. Vastu tells this very tale in a slightly mystical manner. It is advisable to get rid of old decorations, damaged items, worn out boxes etc to dispel the negative energies mustering in your house.

9. Shape the rooms rectangular- This is a very geometrical perspective. Rectangle or square shaped rooms facilitate efficient utilization of the whole land area and are also more manageable from the furniture point of view. As most of our tables, cupboards and beds are all rectangular, they fit in line with rectangular rooms. And Vastu too gives this a green card. It has been scripted in the Vastu Shastra that rectangular rooms bring about order in the house and create a happy aura.

this is almost exactly like the table i am ordering for our new home, it is fantastic, and the pictures do not do it justice, it creates a much more modern holiday setting and is so much more dramatic than the traditional 12 top rectangular tables

8. Color therapy is indispensable- All of our interior designers just go highbrow when it comes to colors. There are a million theories out there- orange will give an enthusiastic touch, blue calms the onlooker, green is literally evergreen and the blabber is never ending. Time for some revelation- These themes have not been crafted by some Tom, Dick or Harry; Vastu already said it all. Light colors like blue, pink, lavender are suitable for bedroom. Kitchen should have a tinge of fire and hence red is the pick.  White is suitable for study to enhance concentration.

7.  Be painting wise- I guess everyone can agree unanimously that our personal little haven should always be pleasing, that is like the number one priority. Ergo the paintings and murals we choose for our walls become very vital. We have been flooding our peppy walls with sunrises and sunsets, horses azure and dotted lilies. Vastu since times memorial has just been placing a gentle reminder about the same. Paintings of natural scenes are appreciated and depictions of wars, violent or somber sketches are discouraged.

6. Mirrors can make it or break it- Vastu places strong emphasis on the proper placement of mirrors in the house as they are lauded as the reflectors of energy. They can either brim the house with vigor or drain out all the delight of the residents. Mirrors are abhorred in front of beds (you don’t want to be the crazy snow white’s mother, do you?) and study (your books deserve all of your attention). This dictum seems perfectly scientific and supportable I guess.

5. Lighting cannot be taken lightly- Vastu Shastra, interior designers and prospective residents resonantly stress in unison that the lightings of your house can prominently affect your mood. Reminisce every time you have walked into your house when there was a power cut, wasn’t there an involuntary element of shock and dismay? To overcome the prolonged depressing effects of unsuitable lights, Vastu has one simple rule- make it bright and warm.

4. Basil has to find a place in your abode- Basil plant or tulsi must be planted in the front verandah of the house. Apart from the medicinal qualities of this plant, it adds to the greenery of the house and as indoor plants have always been the top favorites of the sophisticated decorators, why not keep something that is aesthetically pleasing and also has some viable value.  Vastu also suggests that thorny plants like cactus should be avoided (fair enough, you don’t want to get hurt accidently!)

3. Doorbells should be mellifluous- How many times have we made faces when that devil bell chimes and we are in the middle of some work! And this is perfectly natural, but while we blame our busy schedules for this attitude; care to spare a thought about the doorbell? Vastu dictates that doorbell should neither be very low pitched, which might be a little inaudible, nor very high pitched, which definitely annoys our brain cells. So just choose a soothing bell, something that can get into your ears and make you smile.

2.  Curtains matter more than you think- Curtains directly affect the ambience of a room. That is why Vastu underscores that stark colors like red and blue black should be kept at an arm’s length in bedrooms while these same colors can be used in the living area to give a classy look. For bedrooms and study, light colored curtains make a perfect choice.

1. Main entrance is actually the “main” entrance- The front door or the main entrance of your house is the first pallet to flaunt off your decoration quotient. People already emphasize the front door too much and often falter on making a decision about this first look. Vastu Shastra has a simple principle for this- Make the front door stand out by giving it a bigger frame than all the other doors. It should emanate grandeur and auspicious positive symbols. A welcoming and warm look that is all!

So all in all, Vastu Shastra is not some ruler wielding typical professor which fuses your decoration plans, infact it is a facilitator which can assist your decisions through simple rules. And trust me when you have a streamlined treasure to guide the tiniest of your home décor elements, from paintings to the front door, it just can’t get cooler than this.
